As of November 2024, there are well over 16,000 mining job vacancies across Australia, underscoring the urgent need for skilled professionals in the sector. In response, the Australian Government has implemented significant reforms to its skilled migration program to attract international talent and address these shortages.

Key Changes to the Skilled Migration Program:

  • Introduction of the Skills in Demand Visa: Scheduled to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa by the end of 2024, this new three-tier system aligns visa criteria with occupation and salary levels, streamlining the process and providing clearer pathways for skilled migrants.

  • Reduced Work Experience Requirement: Effective November 23, 2024, the minimum work experience for applicants decreased from two years to one year of full-time experience in their occupation or a related field, broadening the pool of eligible candidates.

  • Expanded Recognition of Casual Employment: Casual employment now counts towards the required work experience, offering greater flexibility for applicants with diverse employment backgrounds.

These reforms aim to attract skilled professionals from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines, addressing immediate labour deficits in the mining sector. By integrating international expertise, these initiatives seek to enhance operational efficiency and contribute to economic growth in both Australia and the migrants' home countries.
